Dear Friend of the Page,

March opens as our Black Writers Studio Series — a month devoted not to performance, but to disciplined, sacred practice. Here, we study the tradition that shaped us and tend to the voice forming within us now. This is not a sprint toward publication; it is a steady return to the page and to the lineage that made our writing possible.

You have a right to be here. You have a right to write.

Before the noise. Before the metrics. Before the world decides what counts.

You.

Your voice matters. Even if no one claps. Even if no one reads. Even if the pages live quietly in a drawer beside your bed.

You belong to a long, unbroken line of Black writers who kept journals, notebooks, envelopes, receipts, scraps of paper folded into back pockets. Those who built something from nothing but breath and belief. Those who wrote because they had to. Because the story would not leave them alone. Because writing has always been survival, witness, and future-making.

Perhaps your journey has not included everything society insists is required for a “good life.” Perhaps your path has curved, paused, detoured, unraveled, or begun again.

Still, every morning your eyes open is another chance to build the life you choose.

And choosing to honor the gift within you — the one whispering, "write this down" — is both a wonderful and terrifying step toward legacy.

Let’s say that plainly.

It is brave to write. It is holy to write. It is ordinary and sacred at the same time.

This month, we gather not as experts above you, but as companions within the tradition. We will study craft with care. We will practice with consistency. We will build slowly and intentionally — sentence by sentence, page by page.

No rush. No performance. No proving.

Just presence.

Because the good news is this: you are not alone in the work.

There have been others before you. There are others beside you. And I, too, am a Friend of the Page.

We will read. We will reflect. We will write the work forward.

And even if the world never sees every sentence, you will know you honored the call inside you.

That is enough.

Today, we begin again.

Take your seat. Open your notebook. Breathe.

You have a right to be here. You have a right to write.

With you in the quiet and in the becoming,

Honey WordSmith,
